We express our collective shock and sadness at the premeditated murder of 49 people and the wounding of 53 more, the majority LGBTQ Latina/os, friends, family, and allies at Pulse, a queer nightclub in Orlando, Florida on June 12, 2016. We may never know what inspired this heinous act, but we join the world in grieving this deadly expression of what appears to be homophobia, nativism, imperialism, colonialism, racism, misogyny and sexism. As scholars, educators and activists increasingly at risk on our campuses and in our classrooms, we affirm the rights of all people to exist and thrive, as well as the imperative to counter the forces of ignorance and hatred. We do so with our sustained commitment to knowledge production, education and empowerment. Saber es poder.
